Theory Class

Placement in Music Theory I and the Analysis Seminar will be determined by a short placement exam, administered on the first day of the festival.

Music Theory I: Also known as Opus I is a course in the
                fundamentals of music theory, including
notes on the staff, intervals, scales, key
signatures, triads and seventh chords, and
                basic diatonic harmony and voice-leading.
Opus I will give the beginning theory
student a solid preparation for college-
                level music theory courses.

Analysis Seminar: For students who are fluent in the fundamentals of music theory the analysis seminar provides the opportunity to study in more detail the masterworks performed by the chamber ensembles and the orchestra. The emphasis is on how analysis both reflects and influences the way we hear a piece and our approach to performing it. This seminar will be divided into two classes.

What is the Performance Class?

The Stony Brook Summer Music Festival has established the tradition for you and your fellow Young Artist the opportunity to perform as a soloist in the Recital Hall of the Staller Center for the Arts. The Performance Class is a venue in which you will gain an invaluable experience by performing for your peers and for the Festival Faculty. After your performance, you will privately receive Master Class comments from each member of the Faculty. EVERYONE is eligible and invited to audition for this opportunity. Auditions will be held on Monday, July 26th - the first full day of the Festival. Your audition will be for the entire Festival Faculty who will select the top performances for the Performance Class. Keep in mind: The audition alone is an invaluable experience! We encourage everyone to audition. For those of us who have had the privilege of hearing each and everyone of you, we would like you to share your extraordinary abilities with all of the Faculty members and with your peers. This is also a great opportunity for the Faculty to get to know you better and more quickly. As an added bonus - we can help you reach your goals and perhaps even define your goals during the Festival and in your future. So.arrive with a prepared piece and give us what youve got on Monday! This is a great tradition and we enjoy providing each one of you this great opportunity. p.s. Please remember to bring your piano accompaniment in order for the Faculty Artist pianists to accompany if you are selected for the Performance Class!
